Back in the mid 70's when I really got into black powder shooting. I also had an 1858 and loved it. The only problem I ever had with it was during firing a round, the cap would almost disintegrate leaving small bits of the cap down the hammer slot and prevent the hammer from being brought back for the next shot. A simple shake would clear the debris.
#10 caps were too tight for the nipples so I would lightly squeeze the sides of a #11 which made a snug fit on the nipples. I loved that gun.
