New Romanian WASR 10/63

Just got my first AK47 and I must say after 300 rounds I'm hooked on these guns. This has got to be the coolest gun I have ever shot. I've been shooting the Yugo ammo and not a single failure of any kind out of this WASR 10/63. Its stamped 1968, so from what I've been reading and seeing at the range I think I got a good one. First trip to the range did put me 3 inches low and 3 inches to the right at 25 yards. I personally don't like the front sight pin (not centered) in hood so I ordered an adjustable rear battle sight on Gunbroker and corrected the problem that way. I also didn't care for the pistol grip that was on the gun so I replaced that with a Tapco Grip. We all know the stock wood leaves room for alot of improvement so I followed the YouTube video AK 47 Beautification step by step and what I now have looks much different than the gun I took from the box. What a fun shooter...........

My first was a WASR and it made me smile a lot.
Be sure and clean everywhere after shooting that Yugo ammo.
It's corrosive.

Yes I've been cleaning the begeses out of this thing because of what I've read about corrosive ammo and its fine and dandy inside and out but thanks for the heads up.

I think it would really improve the look of that weapon to add a wooden pistol grip stained the same as the rest of the furniture, and put a cleaning rod under the barrel.

Also some people like to polish or at least de-blue the bolt carrier. Its a small change but it really contrasts with the black steel and red wood.

Your right! I am looking for a wood grip that is fatter than the normal. I might even try to carve one myself, one that fits my hand better than the stock grips.
It would look good stained to mach the rest of the wood. Polished carrier will be another project for the winter blues............... these guns are just a blast to work with.

You could try Ironwooddesigns for a grip. US made, many types to choose from. They come unfinished. Good luck

Great looking weapon!! How many coats of poly did it take for that gloss???

I just started refinishing the upper/lower grips tonite, really like the way it looks so far...

I have 6 coats of Poly on it. I put the first one on Monday evening, 3 hours later another. Following evening I buffed with 0000 steel wool and added another coat. Three hours later another. Following evening I again buffed with 0000 steel wool and added coat 5. Three hours later the final coat. Reassembled gun Thursday evening.............. Done.. Good Luck !

i too recently got a 10/63 UF wow... a good deal... but build quality must of been done by drunken people.. lol canted front sight.. eazy fix with the 19.99 dollar front sight post mover an elevation tool.. Magazine well was not drilled perfect... in fact another drunken mistake... but not too hard of a fix.... it took me about 10 hours to get a perfect fix... looks like the bolt carrier was getting sticky down the gas tube so i polished the top of the bolt eazy very eazy fix an now runs like a camp.

I just picked up a WASR 10/63 yesterday for a mere $390, I've already swapped the furniture out with a spare set I had and added a Romanian grip and an old leather sling I had.

It's missing the cleaning rod but had two steel magazines and a nice bayonet that I believe is Polish as it doesn't look like any Romanian bayonet I've ever seen.

Here's some pics...




I haven't shot it yet but I'm not worried about it. It was Henderson Defense-certified so I am pretty sure it'll shoot straight!

I asked this on another thread but I'll ask it again here - I'm very familiar with the previous iterations of Rommie AK's but why are these designated 10/63? Is it marked on the reciever or on the box from CAI? Just curious.

I have a WASR fitted with an UF coming - but it wasn't listed as such - just Romananian UF AK - which is typical of SPG where I got it....

I just got my WASR 10 from Atlantic Firearms and they did not list it as a 10/63 but sure enough it has "GP/WASR 10/63" stamped on the receiver and it has the Cugir triangle w/arrow stamped on the trunion. The rifle is also stamped with the date, 1979.
