Bill would end gun bans on Idaho campuses

BOISE – Idaho would forbid its colleges and universities from banning guns on campus – including at football games – under legislation pending in a House committee.

“The right to keep and bear arms is guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the Idaho Constitution,” Rep. Erik Simpson, R-Idaho Falls, told the House State Affairs Committee on Wednesday. “I believe that the Legislature never intended for universities and colleges to institute firearms bans.”

After much debate in the Idaho House, Senate and college campuses across the state, House Bill 222 was killed once it reached the Senate.

The Senate shot down the bill 6-3, which passed through the State House by a vote of 41-28 March 16 after a two-hour meeting.

I've been following this story as it unfolded here in Boise... one of the key opponents of this bill was Republican Senate Majority Leader Bart Davis, whose 23-year-old son was shot by a Boise State University student who was illegally concealed-carrying while also illegally drinking while carrying at an OFF-CAMPUS college party after he had gotten in an argument and thrown beer in the shooter's face. Even though it happened off-campus, his anecdotal account really swayed many of his fellow Republican colleagues (who dominate both the Idaho House and Senate) and caused the bill to fail.

Unfortunately, it may take a mass-shooting happening in one of our campus "gun free zones" before these people wake up and come around on the issue.
