I bought some of these for my family last year... its got something like a 5 or 7 year shelf life, maybe longer, I'd have to dig it out of my "meds box" to confirm.

they are OUT. iodate, iodide pills are all scarfed up, unless you buy in bulk. (powder) ive got my 1 bottle of pills i got for just such a event, but a nuke plant is 60 miles west of me. (rochelle ill.) the west coast on the other hand, and i lived there for a long time, no way is going to have tens of millions of doses. the way the air hangs in LA? the fog and rain in OR and WA? ohhh crap. radioactive iodine has a 8 day 1/2 life. the other isotopes are way more long lasting.

Yes as said - potasium iodide tablets. From what I understand, you can also apply tincture of iodine topically - a certain size/amount of skin coverage to impart enough iodine to have the same effect.
The thyroid absorbs iodine. If you have radioactive iodine in the environment and you breath it in, the thyroid will absorb that - unless it is already "full" of good iodine - so that's why you take the suppliments - to keep the thyroid full of the begnine iodine.
