Talking Here's the new Mas 49/56 - this forum needs a new post

I got three more mags for her and have all the reloading components ready to go. The grooves in the bore still have some gunk in them - but I think shooting will loosen that up some and allow me to clean it more thoroughly. I remember that this really helped with my old Turk mausers... which were even worse - and cleaned up eventually to pretty nice bores - and good shooters.

Got one myself; love it! Don't rekon I'll ever sell it. It being a true Mil Spec MBR, it's alot of gun for the $$$$.

    Thanks

And I think it's all about the caliber. The 7.5 is a great round but it's really a handloading proposition.

If they'd of chambered this for the non-existant at that time 7.62x51 NATO, then these would be cloned and cost $1200 or more.

Yeah, you can get them converted.... but for the money, I say just get the M1A1 or even a Saiga.

Well, I'm looking forward to getting the milsurp ammo that I posted about over on the ammo forum - berdan primed which means that I won't be feeling the need to pick it up. And that means no brass catcher. I also want to see how it shoots with its original food...

Nice! You can still find milsurp ammo if you look around... but the steady supply would be from Grafs I guess or maybe Fiocci?

FYI, all surplus is corrosive primed. Clean accordingly. Nice looking example O.S.O.K., the fish scale pattern in the stock is classic.

25 round mags, now that would make it very formidable.

    Thumbs up

Some very nice rifles guys. I need to get some pics of mine. France only made about 250 chambered in 7.62x51 and I've never seen one that was imported. The only ones I know of here have been converted, usually by Century and poorly at that. The rechambering part doesn't seem to be that much of an issue, it's incorporating an adjustable gas system to get it to run right with the 7.62x51, something Century didn't do that causes problems. That and cutting really rough chambers make getting a good conversion pretty hard.

France did make some prototype/test models on a larger receiver in 30.06 (7.62x63). I'd love to have one of those but the chances of that are pretty much slim to none and the price would be out of sight.

7.62 NATO convert. of MAS 49/56

There was a guy who worked on my MAS 49/56 named "Bill Toth" of a company called "Design Systems" .He installed a new gas system that cured the feeding problems of those Century conversions. That was 8+ years ago and now I"ve been having problems contacting him to do another MAS that I found. No replys to phone messages and no e-mail address so I don't know if he's still around.

Welcome to the forum WS. I've heard Bill mentioned before with regards to the 49/56 conversion and I think something about converting the 49/56 to use FAL mags or maybe he modified the mags to work in the 49/56, something like that. Also seem to recall he was out of Pennsylvania. Last report I heard was several years ago that he was no longer doing the conversions.

Thats too bad, he did a fine job with my 1st gun .He made his own gas system that worked great.I've got 2 MAS' in 7.62 and 1 in 7.5. Their the lightest 30 cal battle rifles that I own other than the SCAR.

I fired mine a few times but the only ammo I could get back then jammed and I never tried again. The thing still is like new.

I wish I had bought one I found while working in Washington State at a Pawn Shop. IIRC, he wanted $200 or $225 because he could not get ammo from his usual sources.
