We had someone contact us after using someone else's PKM links that are refinished to look new and repacked to look new in the U.S. We sent them a sample of our new production they did a comparative test and this is what they found this month:
We received the belts. Thank you so much for sending them. I loaded two of them and there was definitely a difference. The belts we got originally looked almost the same with the only visible variations being slight changes in where the metal folds over on some sides. The real difference was in loading. The old ones were often too tight, to the point where we had to sometimes force rounds in with a mallet in order to get them to click in place.
Your belts were much more consistent when it came to the pressure required to link rounds, and were MUCH easier to load and the rounds stayed in place.
Overall, the weight, look, and feel were about the same, but the force required to link them was substantially different.
It's what we expected in that you have received used links, which is actually quite common. There are at least 5 pallets of these counterfeit links in the United States. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
Surplus scrap links are refinished and sold to the USG as new production, with false certificates as they ask. The PKM link is stronger than the NATO M-27 o M-13 link, however, used links can be damaged, and refinishing is only a cosmetic fix which does not repair or fix tolerances. If they make their way onto the battlefield they will fail/ make the gun fail and get people killed. It's sort of like the counterfeit medications and drugs on the international aid market; they are more dangerous than giving the patient nothing at all. Selling off these counterfeit links as new production is fraud and will get someone killed on the battlefield. We think they are refinished 1960s used Chinese scrap out of Albania or Soviet scrap originally out of Ukraine. This is what happens when the USG dumpster drives for the bottom of the barrel.
These links can either seize ammunition in the belt as above, or drop the ammunition out, also jamming the gun at an inopportune time. It's just a matter of time before someone gets killed when they fail.
