I would say they have either real good camouflage or else real bad memories.

I just came close to the lessor reason.

Well, what I know is that zebra stripes are repetitive and vertical because predator cats have a horizontal line of sharp vision (unlike most other mammals that have a circular spot of sharp vision - the "fovea centralis".

This allows cats to see sharply all across a horizontal area - that is, allows them to watch for prey without moving their heads or eyes left and right.

Said another way, if human eyes were like this, we could read an entire sentence without moving our eyes or head at all.

This is also why cats have the vertical slit iris instead of the more common round iris... it gives them a sharper depth of field all across the horizontal sharp region.

Now, since cats have binocular stereo vision, their eyes cross inward slightly to align their vision on the desired image. If someone holds up a finger in front of you and mover the finger towards you, your eyes will cross more and more to keep the finger as a single image.

The amount of crossing and the visual differences between the left and right eye convey DISTANCE information to cats (and to all other mammals).

Now, when a cat sees a zebra, the eyes MAY or MAY NOT "lock onto" the same stripes. That is one eye may lock onto an adjacent stripe and fool the cat's stereo vision and their perception of the distance to the prey.

You can watch countless videos of cats lunging at a zebra and ramming into it rather than grabbing it... because the cat perceived the target to be further away than it actually was.

I remember people making chains out of those tabs. The neighbor girl had one about 20' long....her dad drank a lot of beer.
